About CenturyLink Technology Solutions

CenturyLink Technology Solutions was the branding for the managed hosting and cloud infrastructure arm of CenturyLink, which itself has a history tracing back to the Oak Ridge Telephone Company, founded in 1930. The larger CenturyLink entity evolved through decades of acquisitions and name changes, including Central Telephone and Electronics in 1967 and Century Telephone Enterprises, Inc. in 1971. The modern iteration began to take shape with the acquisition of Embarq in 2009, leading to the CenturyLink, Inc. name in 2010.

The "Technology Solutions" division was significantly formed through the acquisition of Savvis, Inc., a global provider of cloud infrastructure and hosted IT services, for approximately $2 billion in July 2011. This strategic purchase allowed CenturyLink to pivot into enterprise-level managed hosting and cloud services, leveraging Savvis's existing infrastructure and expertise. The business unit provided a suite of services including managed hosting, colocation, private IP VPNs, and various cloud and IT consulting services to a diverse client base that included legal, media, retail, healthcare, and financial businesses. It operated a global portfolio of data centers, delivering hybrid IT solutions.

A significant milestone occurred in May 2017 when CenturyLink divested its data centers and colocation business to a consortium led by BC Partners and Medina Capital for approximately $2.3 billion. This transaction resulted in the formation of a new company, Cyxtera Technologies, which assumed ownership of 57 data centers. CenturyLink retained a minority equity stake (approximately 10%) in Cyxtera and established a commercial agreement to continue offering colocation services to its customers. This move was part of a strategy to shift towards a more asset-light model and focus on its core network infrastructure and integrated IT services, using the proceeds to help fund its major acquisition of Level 3 Communications later that year. In September 2020, the parent company, CenturyLink, Inc., rebranded to Lumen Technologies, Inc. to reflect its new focus on technology and network services for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, while retaining the CenturyLink brand for its traditional copper-based residential and small business services.
