Caringo, Inc. was established in 2005 as a pioneer in the object storage market, founded by Paul Carpentier, Jonathan Ring, and Mark Goros. Jonathan Ring, who served as CEO, brought extensive experience from his time as a VP of Engineering at Siebel Systems and as an angel investor, providing a deep understanding of technology and business needs. Its business centered on its flagship product, Swarm (formerly known as CAStor), an object storage platform designed to decouple data from underlying hardware. This software-based approach allows organizations to build scalable, fault-tolerant storage clusters using commodity servers, significantly reducing total cost of ownership. Swarm provided a foundation for hyperscale data storage, access, and analysis at a petabyte scale, ensuring data integrity and eliminating vendor lock-in. The platform supported various protocols, including S3 and NFS, and featured a web-based portal for administration, search, and metadata customization. Caringo served a diverse client base across sectors requiring robust, long-term data retention and access, such as media and entertainment, government, and high-performance computing. Notable customers included the U.S. Department of Defense, Disney Streaming Services, BT Television, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Argonne National Labs. Over its lifetime as an independent entity, Caringo raised a total of $33 million in funding over six rounds from investors like New Science Ventures and Advantage Capital. In a significant milestone, Caringo was acquired by DataCore Software on January 26, 2021. The acquisition integrated Caringo's object storage expertise into DataCore's comprehensive software-defined storage portfolio, which already included block and file storage solutions.
