Connecting people through art. MoreLess
BucketFeet operates as a footwear brand that sources its designs from a global community of artists. The company's genesis traces back to a serendipitous meeting in Argentina in 2008 between Raaja Nemani, a former finance professional on a worldwide backpacking trip, and Aaron Firestein, an artist who customized canvas sneakers. Firestein, nicknamed "Bucket" in college, had been designing and selling shoes since his university days. Nemani purchased a pair of Firestein's custom-designed shoes, which became a frequent conversation starter throughout his travels, planting the seed for a business venture.
The two officially launched BucketFeet in Chicago in 2011, establishing a platform for artists to submit designs for limited-edition footwear. The business model was centered on providing a global stage for emerging artists; the company selected designs from a vast network of creators, handled manufacturing and distribution, and paid the artists an upfront fee plus royalties for each pair sold. This approach allowed the company to offer a diverse and constantly changing collection of shoes, each with a unique story tied to its creator.
Operating primarily as a direct-to-consumer e-commerce brand, BucketFeet also expanded its footprint through its own retail studios in cities like Chicago and New York, and partnerships with major retailers such as Nordstrom and Bloomingdale's. The product, typically a canvas slip-on or lace-up sneaker, served as a wearable canvas, featuring high-quality printing methods to preserve the integrity of the original artwork. By 2017, the company had cultivated a network of over 40,000 artists from more than 120 countries. That same year, after experiencing rapid growth and securing over $13 million in funding, BucketFeet was acquired by Threadless, a like-minded online artist community and e-commerce company. Following the acquisition, BucketFeet closed its physical retail stores to focus on its core online business, integrating into the Threadless platform to power its footwear category.
