Britishvolt was a UK-based company focused on developing and manufacturing lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. Founded in 2019 by Orral Nadjari and Lars Carlstrom, the company aimed to build a large-scale battery factory, or "gigafactory," in Blyth, Northumberland, to support the UK's automotive industry transition to electric mobility. The project was initially seen as a cornerstone of the UK's industrial strategy for green energy, attracting significant political and media attention. The company's core business was the research, development, and planned mass production of advanced battery cells, targeting automotive manufacturers as its primary clients. The business model was predicated on securing large-scale investment and government support to fund the construction and operation of its gigafactory. Despite securing initial funding and government promises, Britishvolt faced persistent financial difficulties and struggled to raise the necessary capital to proceed with its ambitious plans. In January 2023, after failing to secure last-minute funding, the company fell into administration, a form of bankruptcy protection. Subsequently, its assets, including its technology and the Blyth factory site, were acquired by the Australian firm Recharge Industries in February 2023. However, Recharge Industries' plans also stalled, and by early 2024, the site was sold to Blackstone, an American private equity firm, with the future of battery production at the location remaining uncertain.
