Public Cloud Made Simple MoreLess

Bitcasa, Inc. was a cloud storage company established in 2011 by co-founders Tony Gauda, Kevin Blackham, and Joel Andren. The company emerged from an idea that was a finalist at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in September 2011, attracting significant early attention. Initially headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, the company later relocated to Mountain View, California. Bitcasa secured a total of $19.3 million in funding over three rounds from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Horizons Ventures, Pelion Venture Partners, and Samsung Ventures.

The company's core offering was a cloud storage service designed to provide centralized, streaming storage accessible across multiple platforms, including Microsoft Windows, OS X, Android, and web browsers. Its flagship product, the "Infinite Drive," aimed to function like an external hard drive in the cloud, eliminating the need for local storage and file synchronization between devices. Files were instantly available across all linked devices after being uploaded from one. A key technological aspect was its use of client-side, enterprise-grade AES-256 encryption and a convergent encryption method. This approach involved identifying duplicate data blocks to reduce the actual storage space required, a feature for which the company had a patent pending.

Bitcasa's business model initially targeted individual consumers with a promise of "infinite" storage for a monthly fee. In 2013, this was replaced by a tiered pricing model, and in October 2014, the company controversially discontinued its "Infinite Drive" plans, citing both a lack of demand and abuse of the service. This pivot alienated many early adopters and led to legal challenges. In April 2016, Bitcasa announced it was discontinuing its consumer cloud storage services altogether to concentrate on business-to-business platform products. Customers were given a short window to download their data before it was deleted. The company officially ceased operations in early 2017. While there were reports of an acquisition by Intel, these were subsequently denied by the chip manufacturer.
