Bioxodes

Bioxodes is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel therapeutics for thrombo-inflammatory diseases, with a primary focus on stroke. Founded in 2013 by Edmond Godfroid, the company is located in the Brussels South Charleroi Biopark in Belgium. In October 2022, Marc Dechamps, a biologist with over 35 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, was appointed CEO, while Godfroid became the Chief Operations Officer and Chief Scientific Officer.

The company's lead asset, BIOX-101, is a first-in-class drug candidate for treating intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a severe form of stroke with no currently approved cure. BIOX-101 is a recombinant version of a protein found in the saliva of the Ixodes ricinus tick. This protein has a dual mode of action, providing both anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory effects. It inhibits Factors XIa and XIIa of the intrinsic coagulation pathway, which helps to reduce clotting without increasing the risk of bleeding—a critical factor in treating hemorrhagic strokes. Additionally, it inhibits the activation of neutrophils and the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which mitigates inflammation and secondary brain damage.

Bioxodes has completed a Phase 2a clinical trial (the BIRCH trial) for BIOX-101 in ICH patients, which has shown encouraging interim results, meeting its primary safety endpoints and demonstrating positive trends in reducing hematoma volume and inflammation. Following the unanimous recommendation of the Data Monitoring Committee, the company is preparing for a potentially registrational Phase 2b trial, expected to begin patient recruitment in early 2027. BIOX-101 has received Orphan Drug Designation in both Europe and the United States for the treatment of ICH. The company is also developing BIOX-101 for ischemic stroke and other undisclosed thrombo-inflammatory indications. Bioxodes is pursuing a Series B funding round to finance these upcoming clinical trials and aims for potential commercialization of BIOX-101 as early as 2030.
