B dot Medical Inc. is a Japanese medical device company established in 2017 as a startup from the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST). The company was founded by Takuji Furukawa, who serves as President and CEO, along with six colleagues. Furukawa, who holds a Ph.D. in physics, has over 20 years of experience in the design and development of particle therapy systems at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS). His background includes leading projects for heavy ion therapy systems and developing respiratory-gated scanning irradiation technology, for which he received a commendation from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2012.

The firm is focused on making proton beam therapy, a precise form of radiation treatment with fewer side effects than traditional X-rays, more accessible. Proton therapy's adoption has been limited by the massive size and high cost of conventional systems, which require dedicated buildings. B dot Medical addresses this challenge by developing an ultra-compact proton therapy system, named "Phemto®". The company's business model centers on the manufacturing and sale of these systems to hospitals, particularly those in urban areas with space constraints. By significantly reducing the equipment's size and cost, B dot Medical aims to enable installation in rooms currently used for standard X-ray therapy.

The core of B dot Medical's technology is its proprietary 'Magnetic Gantry™', which uses superconducting magnets to bend the proton beam without a large, complex rotating mechanism. This innovation, combined with the 'B-Flash scanning system™' for high-speed beam delivery, allows for a substantial downsizing of the equipment to about one-third the height of conventional systems. In 2022, the company successfully completed a Proof of Concept (POC) in collaboration with Osaka University, confirming the feasibility of its design. B dot Medical has received funding from investors including Mitsubishi UFJ Capital, Pegasus Tech Ventures, and Oita Venture Capital, and has been supported by national grants from organizations like NEDO and AMED in Japan.
