Auriga Space

Auriga Space is an aerospace and defense technology company developing an electromagnetic launch system to disrupt the conventional rocket market. Founded in 2022 by Winnie Lai, the company is headquartered in Garden Grove, California. Lai, who previously served as a VP at SpinLaunch, brings experience in kinetic launch systems to Auriga, focusing on electromagnetism as a core technology. Her vision is to create a launch service as on-demand as calling an Uber, addressing the months or years of waiting time associated with current space access.

The company's business model centers on providing a cheaper, higher-cadence, and cleaner alternative to traditional chemical rockets for both commercial and defense clients. Its core product is a ground-based, electrically powered linear accelerator that uses magnetic levitation to propel a launch vehicle to hypersonic speeds of over Mach 6. This system acts as a reusable first stage, after which a smaller, conventional upper-stage rocket ignites to complete the journey into orbit. By eliminating the need for large first-stage boosters and their fuel, Auriga aims to significantly reduce launch costs, environmental impact from hydrocarbon emissions, and preparation time, allowing for multiple launches per day.

Auriga Space is executing a phased development plan to commercialize its technology. The first phase, "Prometheus," is a lab-scale accelerator for ballistic and recoverable hypersonic testing, creating an early revenue stream by serving a critical market need for defense and commercial hypersonic development. Subsequent phases include "Thor," a full-scale outdoor hypersonic test solution, and ultimately "Zeus," the platform intended for daily on-demand orbital launches. The company has secured significant funding, including a $5M round in 2023 and a subsequent $6M round from venture capital and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contracts with AFWERX and SpaceWERX, bringing its total funding to over $12M.
