Aurelius Systems

Aurelius Systems, founded in 2024 by Michael LaFramboise and John Marmaduke, is a defense technology company developing AI-powered laser systems to counter unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The San Francisco-based startup is focused on creating lightweight, modular, and cost-effective directed energy weapons that can be deployed on various platforms, from vehicles to fixed installations, to provide mobile point defense. LaFramboise, the CEO, has a background in the laser systems industry, having previously worked at Coherent, a major supplier for directed energy systems.

The company's flagship product is the Archimedes Laser Sentinel, an autonomous turret that can detect, track, and neutralize drone threats from over a kilometer away. The system is designed to be platform-agnostic, offering a versatile solution to the increasing use of mass-manufacturable drones in modern warfare. Aurelius aims to address the significant cost disparity where traditional anti-drone measures, such as missiles, are thousands of times more expensive than the drones they target. The Archimedes system seeks to offer a near-zero marginal cost per engagement.

Aurelius Systems has demonstrated its technology's effectiveness in real-world scenarios. During a Joint Interagency Field Experimentation (JIFX) event at Camp Roberts, a 2-kilowatt Archimedes prototype successfully destroyed multiple drones, operating autonomously even in heavy rain. This operational success has attracted attention from various U.S. military stakeholders, including Air Force Special Operations Command and Joint Special Operations Command.

The company has secured funding from several venture capital firms and investors. It raised $2 million in a seed round in July 2024, with investors including Decisive Point, Detroit Venture Partners, and Outlander VC. This was followed by an additional investment from notable figures like Naval Ravikant. Aurelius was also an award recipient in the US-Singapore Joint Challenge for novel counter-drone systems, organized by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU).
